Chicken Program at Messiah Village 12-17-10

We did our third chicken program with 6 chickens, this time at Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, PA. I take a chicken out of the crate and carry her around, letting the residents pet her as I talk about that particular breed of chicken. Then they go in the little fenced area with food and water so the people can see them act like chickens.

Things were going fine, except for Pearl, our leghorn. You'll notice on the last picture that we have Pearl back in the crate. She was so independent that day. She did not think she had to stay in the fence. Kept flying out. The residents loved it. But since it was carpet and not linoleum, I couldn't have her walking around among the people, which is what she wanted to do. At one point she flew on top of the crate and was showing off. We put her IN the crate to confine her so we could continue with the program. Well, she laid an egg in the crate. The people adored her. She was so entertaining.

Actually, the people loved all the chickens. They each have different feathers, both to look at and to touch.

We have been invited back to do a program in another wing of the facility.
